Howard Wilson Coles Society

The Howard Wilson Coles Society was established to recognize the vital role African Americans play in improving the quality of life in greater Rochester.

The Society was founded upon the vision that African American leaders will establish a powerful legacy of investing in programs that bring about good results for African Americans, and by extension, the greater Rochester community as a whole.

Through their gifts of $1,000 or more a year to United Way of Greater Rochester's annual fundraising appeal, members of the Howard Wilson Coles Society will positively impact the lives of people in need throughout our community - including our children, our families, the elderly, and the disabled.

On top of the good feeling they receive from helping others, members of the Howard Wilson Coles Society will enjoy the other benefits of being a United Way leadership giver ? including opportunities to participate in special social and informational events designed to enhance the philanthropic experience.

The Society is named in honor of Howard Wilson Coles, legendary community leader and publisher of The Frederick Douglass Voice. During his life, Coles dedicated himself to the relentless pursuit of equality for African Americans throughout our community. He was a shining example of an individual who embodied the ideals of African American leadership - strength, courage, and a passion for what is right.
